Description

of passers-by seeing it in a window and mistaking it for a real flesh and blood girl

her left hand gently caressing Rinaldo's golden curls and hand

the woman whose withered arm was healed when she washed the Saint's linen) and probably

where he worked all his life

signed and dated 1723

Young Woman Frame:black of passers-by seeing it inThe inscription is a false signature (apparently added by the artist) referring to Jean Alexis Grimou (1678 1733). The style and bravura handling are certainiy Fragonard's, as was first recognised by Rosenberg and Compin, and as the overpainted signature confirms. Rosenberg suggests a date of c. 1769.
